Jude 1:3
Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found
it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all
delivered to the saints.
St. Jude speaks of our common salvation. It is something we share together with every Christian. So, we are to contend for this Faith that was once for all delivered to us as God’s saints. We must stand firm in the faith that our Savior has given us to share. This is the “faith of our fathers” as the hymn speaks of. It is something inherited from the earliest church. This is the Word and worship of our God once for all given to the church of God! We observe the day of the Reformation this month. In the time of the Reformation of God’s church the desire was not for novelty but to rediscover and also preserve the best and the Biblical from our Christian past. The good news that we are saved by faith alone in Christ’s grace alone was recovered. Also, part of our common salvation and heritage shared is the Divine Service built on Scripture. So, we serve him together who firstly serves us!
To make the most of this Service we must focus in faith. The liturgy requires not only appreciation but careful attention and devotion. Someone has said, invest in it to find the best in it! In one of the historic writings of the Lutheran Reformation it is said that reverent worship is an attitude of the heart and all in response to God and his saving grace. It is also said that this worship is a habit to be practiced. God’s worship is worth our time and learning. We need his saving presence, and he is certainly worthy of our honor, reflected in a sense of gladness with gravity. Let us then share these gifts of God!
Let us worship with his Word, for this is our Reformation heritage!
